Marking four years of Chapter Zero

Last night we marked four years since the formation of Chapter Zero with the help of more than 150 of our members, partners and supporters in an event at the Banking Hall.

The dinner was sponsored by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP), and featured a keynote by Sarah Breeden, who delivered an official speech in her capacity as Executive Director, Bank of England. She reinforced the importance of each of us playing our role, engaging with the challenges we need to overcome, and continuing to learn as we work together to make the transition to net zero.

Speech

The responsibility for driving forward the transition to net zero is not only for governments and the authorities in building the frameworks. As NEDs, it includes all of your firms in using those frameworks. And you can, and must, make progress now whilst policy is developing – ahead of regulation and to support the development of best practice. A necessary foundation for that is investing in education to increase your staff’s understanding of climate issues. Without that, none of this can happen. Transition plans are fundamental to driving the right transition. They allow financiers both to manage their risks and to allocate capital to support real economy decarbonisation. And by highlighting where there is clarity about the way forward and where gaps remain, they compel the right conversations. I encourage you all to engage in them now.

Thank you to those who were able to gather with us on the night, for all the wider support and everyone who has been involved over the past four years. We’ve come a long way and, with our strong community, we have the potential to go much further and write the next chapter.

Inspiring

I am so grateful to everyone that has played a part in getting us to where we are now, and seeing so many of our valued partners and supporters in the same room was inspiring.

Navigating the climate/geopolitics nexus challenge

How boards can lead through geopolitical uncertainty and maintain momentum on climate was the topic under discussion at an event – entitled ‘Geopolitics, resilience and strategic courage’ – in which Chapter Zero partnered with McKinsey. From the shift in the status quo, to understanding the system we are working within, to the importance of board and executive leadership during uncertainty while continuing to innovate and decarbonise, the event offered Chapter Zero members insights into how boards can navigate the dual challenges.
