UNEP FI publishes a guide for insurers on ensuring a resilient nature-positive future

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) has released a first-of-its-kind global practical guide for insurance industry to assist insurers in addressing nature-related risks. The guide explores how insurance can negatively impact nature and contribute to nature loss, which in turn affects insurance business and its financial resilience.

The guide was built on the Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI), a global framework for the insurance industry to address environmental, social and governance risks and opportunities.

Why it matters for boards:

  • Outlines practical, actionable steps for integrating nature considerations into insurance operations.
  • Helps insurance companies align with global biodiversity frameworks.
  • Highlights the role of senior leadership, including the Board of Directors, in building awareness and support around integration of nature-related priorities across insurance companies.
  • Provides guidance on the establishment of board oversight for nature-related issues.
  • Helps boards understand their companies’ role in building resilience for communities and economies through nature-positive practices.
